I remember when I was having my official first treatment, how it all felt so real. I thought to myself it was like I was one of those celebrities who promote healthy living and exercise when really they are secretly having liposuction.
But in all truth I am not doing this to fit in with society. The reason I wanted this so much was, well obviously to feel better about myself but because I’m such a hygienist, the hair made my skin look dark and shaded and since I’ve had this done I can truly look at my skin for what it is.
Especially my legs, even though it’s not finished, I love wearing shorts around the house and not having to worry about whether I need to shave.
When my friend saw my legs after my treatment she asked if my legs would be smooth and clear, not like when you can see all those red dots (hair follicles) afterwards, I said yes and she felt jealous…I mean isn’t that a perk?
Well I’m doing this now and hopefully I feel as good after when it’s over as I do now.

Spot solution
I mentioned lately how I have been getting spots and did not know if it was unusual for this to be happening.
Well I spoke to the woman and she said it is not something to worry about and may be best for me to just exfoliate. I figured it be better if I start exfoliating in a couple days so it doesn’t effect my after care treatment.
So I hope they go away and ill keep you updated.

Watch those discounts!
As I was making my appointment for my next leg treatment, a client of Sk:n’s was paying for her next instalment for one of her treatments.
The worker said it would be £299.00 for her treatment and the client said she paid £230.00 last time. * The worker said there must have been a discount but the client did not recall having any discount.
They looked up at the records are realised during her last treatment there was a discount. The client said she didn’t realise as her just went in one day and she decided to have the treatment.
What to learn from this:
- If you decide on a treatment, remember in my previous blog when I mentioned they often do discounts here and there; make sure you are fully aware of these.
- Also if you realise there is a discount and want a treatment, it may be best off thinking about paying for the full six treatments, instead of just getting discount off one instalment of the six
* I couldn’t help but over hear as the woman was basically standing next to me, but hope it comes of use to you in the future.

Second Treatment
27th May – arms/underarms stage two
Today I went in for my second instalment for my laser hair treatment on my arms and underarms.
I had a different woman this time. She was so sweet and even had good taste as she liked my shoes and my rolling stones earrings.
So at this point I was feeling pretty good about myself.
She started with my underarms first, I was actually surprised about how much it hurt, because the first time I had it done I didn’t really feel anything. Oh but my lady folks…this was just the beginning.
Maybe all this blogging of my occurrences made me feel somehow more prepared about my next treatments to come, but I now realise it doesn’t really work out that way.
She then started on my lower arms and from my first treatment I remember how it can be painful around the bone area so I tried to ‘woman up’.
As she began it kinda hurt and I was thinking to myself, is it the bone area all ready? I then kinda noticed the pain wasn’t stopping and I then realised it was going to hurt like this throughout.
So as she moved to do my hands, I was thinking if my arms actually hurt this time round, imagine my hands as it was quite painful before, so yeah it was painful there also.
As she moved to my upper arms, I felt kinda relieved as that area is not entirely bony. But with the way the laser was treating me this time, I didn’t know what to expect.
At this point it was becoming a highlight as it did not hurt as much.
Because of some reason, we had to move out of our room to another. I didn’t mind as it kinda gave me time to calm down from having one arm done.
As I as getting up I looked at my hand and parts of my arm and noticed only what I can describe as a bubbly reptile like appearance that has surfaced on my skin…I kid you not! * Oh what a sight!!!
I asked the woman if this was normal, and she said it was. It’s just my hair follicles have inflamed. She said she sees it as a good reaction as it means it is working and reaching the root of the hair.
I then realised it makes sense as the first treatment only goes half way down to your hair and then onwards it starts to reach the root.
She said once she has finished doing my other arm the follicles will go back to normal, which was a major relief.
Even though it was an awful sight to look at I couldn’t keep my eyes off my hand just waiting for it to go away, but I soon began to look away because it was quite repulsive.
Well we moved onto my next arm. It seemed to go much quicker, possibly because I just wanted to go beyond the pain.
I told the woman it was quite strange that all of this is happening when I didn’t even so much go red last time (minus the burns incident). She said it was, especially since they haven’t even boosted up the heat temperature…I dread to think how that will feel now!!
I often feel cold when having the treatment done from the cold air of the machine gun that helps cool your skin. It makes you get goosebumps which is kinda freaky as those goosebumps are your hair follicles that you are attacking.
It is normal to go red afterwards. It has been a few hours and when I look at my arms all my hair follicles are red and it’s a strange thing as you can actually see how many follicles you have.
* Sorry I didn’t take any photos, my brother has taken my camera while he is away…dam brothers. But ill try to get some of my legs if anything peculiar happens (which I hope isn’t the case).

Should have done this sooner!
I realise this may have been useful at the earlier stages of my blog, but I recently watched that show on Channel Four ‘Embarrassing Illnesses’ and the episode featured the company Sk:n in the show.
A woman was getting hair removal treatment on her neck due to a hormonal imbalance.
This video is not of that particular woman but is a demonstration of the treatment and can give you a chance to see what it is like.
This video shows the equipment Sk:n actually uses.
This video shows the process you go through when getting the treatment done.

There back!
As I popped out the shower one day, I noticed the spots gradually crept back to my annoyance. They were around the top of my arm and shoulder area and there are more of them. The spots are small but I just look really red, and it wasn’t because I just had a shower.
It’s May now.
Some of the spots seem to go away here and there but not all of them. It‘s starting to annoy me but I thought I would just mention it when I go in for my next treatment which is not long away.
On the other hand my legs are doing great. Not a peep out of them.
The only problem I guess is that my legs are kinda pasty, so I need to get out in the sun and get my tan back. May sound easy but when you live in the North East of England, the sun usually spends its time far away from us.

Ahhh spots
As I looked at my arms with relief for looking at them for the first time without my burns, I began to have another worry on my hands.
I noticed that I had a few spots surfacing here and there. There were quite big. So I rang sk:n to ask if it was normal.
The woman said it has nothing to do with the laser treatment; it is something that my skin is doing on its own. They said they have spot creams I can always use but it shouldn't be something to worry about.
I then I started to think why this is happening, I came to the conclusion of it occurring from the burn cream. The first time I ever put it on my first observation was of how greasy it was. As my pores are being opened for the first time on my arms, as I have never done anything to my old hair, the greasiness of the cream was getting into pores making spots surface.
I thought I would try my usual method, wait and see. If the spots get worse then go see sk:n or maybe they will just go away on their own and I won’t have to worry about it.
The spots eventually went away…yey!

First hair falls out!
19th April –
When I had the hair removal on my armpits the hair was just starting to come through. The hair was singed which is normal. I hadn’t shaved my hair off since the treatment as I thought I will wait until they fall out so I don’t interfere with the process.
My hair hadn’t grown since the treatment, but I wanted to shave them anyway. As I felt the remaining hair, a couple of strands fell out. I then started to stroke the hairs and pulling them out and they just came out. No fuss no pain.
It was the first time I kinda felt happy about all this.

Burns please go away!
As it closes to the end of the week the burns seem to be fading but not fully disappeared. So I figured I would keep using the cream for a few more days and if they don’t go away I guess I will have to drag myself back to sk:n.
Around about 9 days later the burns seem to be fully gone…finally! I feel relived.
It just felt like something was going wrong when I only started. As with anything that means something to you, there are risks involved. I would have been pretty bummed out if they didn’t go away, mainly because it could have easily been prevented from the beginning.

Am I going to be ok?
After my leg treatment, I asked the woman whether the burns on my arms were normal.
She looked at them and said that should not have happened and then asked me whether my arm hair was long. I told her that they were and I was told I could still get the treatment but it would be slightly more painful.
She said because the hair was long it caused the skin to burn and the previous woman should have shaved them.
I told the woman if I knew this would happen I would have gone home that day and shaved them. I only got told it can be more painful, not that I would have repercussions.
The woman then gave me some burn cream in which I have to use once a day for a week. I then thought ‘aw do I have to pay for this now, even though this wasn’t suppose to happen’ but I didn’t have to pay.
If the burns don’t go away within a week I would have to come back.

First treatment pt.2
14th April – legs
Since my legs are hair free I could get started.
I had a different woman for this treatment. She was wonderful, so chatty and caring.
She marked me up with a white pencil like they did on my arms and got started.
I thought the thighs would hurt since they said it was an area that many people tend to pigment on but it didn't hurt at all.
I was so chilled out on the chair; I just laid back and looked at my naturally tanned legs (sorry if I’m making you pasty white ladies feel bad) and I thought to myself, ‘wow this is what my legs are gunna look like forever.’ As I’m rushing to go out I would never have to worry about ‘ah have I shaved my legs?’ I guess that’s what it’s all about.
Like my arms, no pain occurred on my upper legs but once it reached the bony area of my lower legs that is where the pain kicked in. The pain seemed more frequent, possibly because it was a larger area so it kept constant.
The most painful areas were the bottom back of my leg that sticks out, the front of my leg where the bone rests against the skin and my toes. In other words, the bony ass areas. I remember thinking in my head ‘OWWWW!’ but I wasn’t like exactly I was jumping out my seat, but I flinched my feet as she did the bottom back bone area as that was kinda unbearable. I remember thinking ‘I’m actually happy to have some fat on my thighs!’
As I said the woman was great and after she finished she said ‘wow, you’ve done so well, didn’t even hear anything from you. I had one woman this morning who was screaming her head off!’
I don’t know she could have been thinner than me and was bonier or I am just a brave survivor. Yeah that sounds better, she wasn’t tough enough and I was yey!

Is this meant to happen?
I was told that after the treatment your skin becomes quite red, so I was kinda glad I wasn’t getting my face done as I would be turning heads, for not the right reasons.
Anyway, I had my arms done and I started to have red patches, I didn’t fret as I knew this was normal. As I left to make my way home I realised on that my arms were burning, but I just had lasers beaming against my skin so what do you expect?
After quite a few hours, they started to cool down but I noticed slight burn marks, but the woman said they often wash away. I was allowed to have a shower on the same day but not like a scorching hot one since my the skin needs time to cool. So I had a mildly cold shower and once the water hit my skin, it felt as though it was on fire!
As the first two days are important since you have to be responsible for your after care, I waited to see if my skin got any better with the creams and sprays I needed to use and if any queries occurred, I was always going back to sk:n for my leg treatment on the following Monday.

What to expect
Until my next hair removal session at the end of May, here is what I should be expecting.
Within two weeks the hair should start to fall out, since the first treatment only zaps the top of the hair, it doesn’t begin zapping it from the root until the next treatment.
As they use different strengths of heat temperatures depending on the fairness of the hair and skin tone, using a lower heat to begin with allows your skin not to panic, and then they rapidly increase the strength.
After the hair has fallen out, it will begin to grow back as the root has not been taken care off (ha sound like an assassin, I shall eliminate it straight away).
But the hair can be shaved or trimmed until the next treatments so don’t feel you have to put up with it just cos you’re having removal treatment.
So, if my calculations are correct, my treatment for my arms/underarms shall be finished in December 2008 and my legs will finish in March 2009.

Products
There are three essential products that you have to use after the treatment.
These are:
- aloe vera gel (100ml)
- thermal spray (150ml)
- aloe vera sunblock spf 30+ (100ml)
These cost £22, but with my 10% student discount it cost me £20. (the products may look different as they have changed the packaging but haven't changed them on the site).
(You may run out of these products but they can be bought from the website or the store...although my beautician friend said she could get me these products for a price next to nothing, so once I follow her up on this, I will let you know.)
For the FIRST TWO DAYS after the treatment, you apply the aloe vera gel then the thermal spray and then the sunblock, twice a day.
It didn’t help that I was at work at the weekend, and had to get up an extra 10 minutes early to do this aftercare treatment.
Then as the first two days has passed, you only need to apply the sunblock once a day throughout your treatment.

The first treatment
Friday 11th April – so the treatment begins.
The woman looked at my arms and said my hair was quite long and said normally a couple of days beforehand they usually tell you to shave the area, but they didn’t tell me this!
She said I could either reschedule my appointment a couple days later after I have shaved my arms or they could still do the treatment today, although it may hurt a little more because of the hair length.
I travelled all that way…really early in the morning may I add cos that was when they could only book me in. So I thought, if the only reason for me to shave my arms was just cos it would hurt a bit more…then screw it, ill suck it up!
So finally, we could get started. The woman used a white pencil to make squares on my skin so she could keep track of the areas she has treated. Then, comes the laser. She began with my shoulder and worked her way down. I was thinking ‘this is nonsense this doesn’t hurt’ and just to think, they were considering sending me home.
A few strands of hair here and there are still attached but appear to be singed slightly, this is normal.
Well, once she finished with my upper arm she moved onto my lower arm. It actually started to hurt at this point, but only a bit. The pain only lasts a few seconds…well technically it’s more like the pain gets shifted. You may have pain in one spot but as soon as that pain goes away the pain moves to the next spot getting treated, but once that square section is done the pain gets relieved.
It wasn’t cos of my hair length this was happening to me, it was because the laser was treating a bony area of my arm. So overall it was going great. Fair enough I felt a little pain but it wasn’t enough for me to scream so loud the people in the waiting area could hear me.
BUT THEN – she was kind enough to do the slight hair on my hands and fingers and I am glad it was a small area cos MY GOD, it hurt! Aw the bones! But it was soon over and I was done, well the arm part of it anyway.
She then did my underarms, because it is a small area it was quick to do. She said most people often have pain in the middle of the armpit but I didn’t really have any problem.
She applied this gel and spray on the areas. I will talk about the products in my next blog.
Considering she said my arm hair were long I didn’t think she would be able to do my legs on the same day, as…lets just say they were kinda long (since I grew them out a bit thinking its like waxing, you cant get the hair properly if you only have the tip of the hair). She said they were quite long and would be best if I shaved them and made another appointment. So I made an appointment the following Monday for my legs.
Since this was my first treatment, with my 20% student discount it is: £1,675.20. (6 treatments) so I saved £419.00.
A full body with a 15% discount would be: £1,779.90
Saving: £314.10

Saving: £314.10
